Payton Westcott steps in Doriane Pin’s shoes as new Mercedes driver in F1 Academy

Mercedes has announced Payton Westcott as their F1 Academy driver for the 2026 season. For audiences familiar with the series, the name rings a bell for a reason: In the final round of 2025, Westcott jumped into the car as Wildcard entry in Las Vegas. Her debut immediately proved successful, seeing her finish in P6 in race 1. With Doriane Pin ending her two-year campaign with the championship title and stepping up her role at Mercedes, Westcott has big shoes to fill.

Why Mercedes stands out

Mercedes’ track record in Formula 1 stands out. The team’s dominance between 2014 and 2021 delivered an unprecedented eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ titles. Lewis Hamilton’s name is, of course, forever linked to that era, alongside 2016 World Champion Nico Rosberg.

Beyond their Formula 1 success, Mercedes have consistently nurtured talent across their development programmes. Graduates include race winners George Russell and Esteban Ocon, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli made headlines with his rookie season last year. Talents such as Frederik Vesti and Paul Aron have also contributed through development work and FP sessions.

This careful selection appears to translate to F1 Academy as well. While Mercedes were not represented in the inaugural season, they joined in 2024 with Doriane Pin, who immediately fought for the championship in her rookie year. Ultimately finishing runner-up and contributing significantly to Prema’s Teams’ Championship win, Pin proved her racing pedigree straight away.

Her selection was no coincidence. Pin built experience through karting, the 2022 Ferrari Challenge Europe, the Le Mans Cup and the FIA World Endurance Championship with the Iron Dames, alongside single-seater campaigns in F4. With Mercedes’ guidance and Prema’s support, she went on to win the F1 Academy championship in 2025 through smart decision-making and consistent performances. Mercedes’ investment clearly paid off, resulting in her transition into a development role within their Formula 1 programme.

What also stood out was how Mercedes integrated their F1 Academy driver into their wider communications. Pin received strong social media visibility and consistent representation alongside the Formula 1 team. Mercedes’ approach to promoting women in motorsport demonstrates both belief and long-term ambition. For Payton Westcott, this provides reassurance but also naturally increases expectations.

How Payton Westcott fits in

When it comes to Payton Westcott’s own career, key difference to fellow rookies of the 2026 can be identified. She began karting at six years old, making her one of the talents who started racing the earliest. Born in the United States, she achieved promising results in the United States Pro Kart Series, California Pro Kart Challenge, and finished third in the Challenge of the Americas.

Partnering with Van Amersfoort Racing since 2025, Westcott has taken part and won in the Formula Winter Series, as well as racing in Formula 4 Italy, Formula 4 Europe and Formula 4 UAE.

After being part of the first group of F1 Academy “Discover Your Drive” karters in the 2024 Champions of the Future Academy Programme, she becomes the first driver of the from that initiative to progress to the grid. Her 2026 campaign is backed by Mercedes representatives, praising her maturity, and her adaptability, as they aim to accelerate her development and build a strong foundation together.

Doriane Pin has also publicly supported her successor:

“Personally, I am also really happy to support Payton throughout the season as she continues to develop in her young racing career. (…) I am looking forward to passing on my knowledge and experience that I learnt to her, being able to support and give her guidance, and being present trackside across the year.”

This public endorsement not only strengthens Payton Westcott’s position but reinforces Mercedes’ image as a structured and supportive programme. Long-term ambition is emphasised clearly, something still relatively rare across the F1 Academy paddock.

For a 16-year-old, expectations can escalate quickly. Yet Westcott’s mindset appears aligned with the opportunity:

“I race to challenge myself, to grow, and to take every opportunity to move closer to my ultimate goal: Proving that I belong in motorsport & competing at the highest level of motorsport.”

Ultimately, it will be up to Payton Westcott to deliver on track, and to Mercedes to replicate the consistency they achieved with Pin. The groundwork is in place, and the 2026 season gains another exciting rookie storyline to look forward to.
