Hamilton fastest from Antonelli in the only Silverstone Free Practice session

As the sole Silverstone free practice session got underway, the local crowd had no shortage of storylines to follow, with all eyes locked on the formidable contingent of home heroes: Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Lando Norris, Oliver Bearman, and rookie standout Arvid Lindblad. Among them, it is Hamilton who commands the most attention; arriving in superb form, the veteran looks remarkably dialed in and visibly comfortable aboard this season’s Ferrari.

While the session was largely uninterrupted, the challenging high-speed topography of the circuit caught several drivers off guard. A recurring struggle for balance saw the likes of Norris, Charles Leclerc, and Kimi Antonelli all push the limits too far, running wide onto the escape areas at Turn 3.

Observing from the pit wall, McLaren CEO Zak Brown struck an optimistic chord, expressing confidence that the team can recapture their momentum and return “back to our winning ways” either before or during the fast-approaching summer break.

“We’re trying to get the car dialed in for the race, then do some performance runs for qualifying […] We’ve got some work ahead of us.”

Struggles and sliding

With roughly twenty-five minutes remaining on the countdown of the Silverstone free practice session, the calm of the session was shattered when Oscar Piastri lost traction, skidding across the run-off and deep into the gravel trap. While the Australian showcased impressive car control to keep his McLaren out of the concrete barriers, the damage to his run plan was already done.

“Oscar, is everything okay?”
“Yeah, just tyres are dead now”

Further down the pitlane, Alpine’s turbulent weekend showed no signs of abating. Pierre Gasly took to the airwaves to voice his frustration with a temperamental chassis, delivering a bleak assessment of the car’s balance:

“The car is very unpredictable, I’m not liking this.”

Meanwhile, the on-track tension spilled over into a fiery, wheel-to-wheel scrap between Nico Hülkenberg and Liam Lawson. The close-quarters combat left the young Kiwi absolutely furious as he barked over the radio,

“What the **** was that?”
“Yeah, that’s unacceptable mate.”

The Champion prevails

Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone 2024, his 9th win on the track

Lewis Hamilton asserted his authority early on, dictating the pace across both the hard and soft compound tyre simulations to claim the definitive fastest lap of the Silverstone free practice session. The seven-time World Champion looks to be carrying an ominous wave of momentum into Silverstone—a circuit where he has historically operated on a completely different plane. As the most decorated driver in the track’s illustrious history, Hamilton’s staggering resume of nine victories, seven pole positions, and fifteen podium finishes serves as a stark reminder that on British soil, he remains the benchmark.
