The opening lap of the British Sprint race delivered every bit of the chaos it promised, triggering an absolute overtake fest. Frankly, you need to watch the tape to truly appreciate the madness; but if you missed it, here is how the early drama unfolded:
Lewis Hamilton nailed his launch, firmly shutting the door on Kimi Antonelli at Turn 1. The same couldn’t be said for Max Verstappen: a sluggish start saw the Dutchman drop like a stone through the field, leaving the door wide open for McLaren to capitalize. Lando Norris was the star of the opening exchanges; launching from sixth, he executed a string of clinical overtakes to slice his way up to third.
By Lap 8, the battle at the front ignited. Antonelli lunged down the Wellington Straight to challenge Hamilton. While the initial attempt didn’t stick, the long game paid off. Hamilton had exhausted his battery defending the initial attack, leaving him defenseless moments later as Antonelli sailed past to claim the lead. The young Italian quickly dropped the hammer, breaking the 1-second gap to keep the Mercedes out of Overtaking mode range.

Further back, Charles Leclerc was on a charge, dispatching both Oscar Piastri and Verstappen to claim fifth before locking onto George Russell’s gearbox in a fight for fourth.
Race end
While the checkered flag beckoned to announce the end of the British Sprint race, the battles on track refused to simmer down. In the final points-paying position, Isack Hadjar threw a late charge at Liam Lawson. The Kiwi managed to hold onto the position, but his aggressive defensive driving, moving under braking to shut the door, caught the eyes of the stewards, triggering a post-race investigation.
Lawson, however, saw the exchange differently over the team radio:
“Man, that was crazy! Moved under breaking so hard”
Isack Hadjar

Higher up the order, Norris was managed to the flag with fuel-saving instructions. Despite a stellar recovery from sixth to third, the McLaren driver was far from celebrating.
“Why can we never get it right?”
Lando Norris
Up front, history was made. Antonelli crossed the line to secure his maiden Sprint victory, officially becoming the youngest Sprint race winner in Formula 1 history. Hamilton followed 2.7 seconds behind, with Norris rounding out the podium.
“Nice work Kimi ! Very impressive work, very well done”
Kimi Antonelli and his race engineer.
“Let’s go!”
With the Sprint settled, all eyes turn to qualifying later today. Will Antonelli carry this momentum to top the timesheets again, will Hamilton exact his revenge, or is a secret third option waiting in the wings?
The top 3’s thoughts

“That was a very good Sprint, I am very happy. Good pace, good first lap. Ready to do it all over again tomorrow. […] There were a couple of things we can certainly do better for later and for tomorrow. George was catching me quickly at the end. “
Lando Norris, P3
Big thank you to everyone that is here, the crowd is crazy. Tough to keep the Mercedes behind, and with it being so windy today, he came flying past.
Lewis Hamilton, P2
I was pushing as hard as I could, I gave it absolutely everything.
[Mercedes] are particularly quick up to Turn 6, so I had to use the boost there. Once [Antonelli] got the Overtake Mode, I couldn’t hold him back. I knew he was coming.
It was a very fun first 10 laps with Lewis, we were both pushing really hard. When I got Overtake [Mode], I knew my chance was coming. Got into Stowe and used everything I had to overtake.
Kimi Antonelli, P1
We can’t let out guard lower, Lewis and Ferrari are doing an incredible job, Red Bull and McLaren are coming and George is super quick.
So we need to keep raising the bar and keep improving.
