Double the action in Saudi Arabia: Formula E heads to Jeddah for a pivotal race week

Formula E arrives in Saudi Arabia for the first double header of Season 12, at a moment when the championship narrative remains wide open. After three rounds and three different winners, the series continues to reinforce one of its core identities: unpredictability. Strategy, adaptability and execution will be decisive as the grid prepares for two night races at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

The opening phase of the season has set the tone for what promises to be another fiercely contested year. Jake Dennis launched the campaign with victory in Sao Paulo, establishing the early benchmark. Nick Cassidy followed by securing a historic first Formula E win for Citroën, before Mitch Evans and Jaguar most recently took control of the spotlight. With momentum shifting from round to round, the championship heads to Jeddah with no clear favourite.

Rounds 4 and 5 introduce the added complexity of a double header format, which traditionally amplifies pressure on both drivers and teams. Decisions made on Friday can have direct consequences on Saturday, while limited recovery time places an even greater emphasis on adaptability. Jeddah marks the first of several double header venues this season, with Berlin, Monaco, Shanghai, Tokyo and London also set to host two race weekends.

Racing under the lights in Jeddah

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit continues to establish itself as Formula E home in Saudi Arabia after the championship previously raced in Diriyah, Riyadh, from Season 5 through Season 10. Introduced last season, the circuit brings a distinct character to the calendar, combining high speed sections with technical sequences that reward precision and confidence.

Measuring 3.001 kilometres and featuring 19 corners, the anti clockwise layout places unique demands on energy management and qualifying execution. Pole position is located on the right hand side of the grid, while Attack Mode activation sits at Turn 13, a key strategic point that can shape race outcomes.

Round 4 will be contested over 31 laps, with Round 5 running to 30 laps. The difference reflects the influence of PIT BOOST, which alters energy profiles and race rhythms. Night racing adds another layer of complexity, with cooler temperatures and evolving grip levels playing a role across the weekend.

PIT BOOST returns as a strategic game changer

One of the defining features of the Jeddah double header is the return of PIT BOOST, used in only one race of each double header weekend. In Season 12, PIT BOOST is mandatory for the race that counts as Round 4, immediately placing strategic execution at the centre of the weekend narrative.

PIT BOOST introduces a compulsory mid race stop in which drivers receive an additional energy allocation. This extra energy allows for more aggressive racing in the second half of the race, reducing the need for extreme energy saving and often producing late race position changes. In a championship built on fine margins, the timing and execution of PIT BOOST can define the outcome.

Historically, races featuring PIT BOOST have delivered greater strategic diversity, increased pit lane drama and intensified on track battles. Its return in Jeddah is expected to play a central role in shaping the competitive order.

How PIT BOOST works in Formula E

PIT BOOST returns this week in Jeddah with Official Partner Fortescue Zero, bringing cutting edge high power charging technology into the heart of Formula E competition. The system delivers a 10 percent energy increase, equivalent to 3.85 kilowatt hours, through a 30 second, 600 kilowatt charge in the pit lane.

Each team is supplied with only one PIT BOOST rig, which prevents double stacking and forces careful sequencing of drivers. This limitation introduces an additional layer of strategy, particularly when multiple cars attempt to pit within a similar window.

Drivers must take PIT BOOST when their State of Charge is between 40 and 60 percent, a requirement that allows teams to vary their approach depending on early race energy consumption. Some may opt for an aggressive opening stint, while others prioritise consistency to create cleaner air later in the race.

Rules and regulations shaping the pit lane battle

For Season 12, PIT BOOST races also feature a revised approach to Attack Mode. Only one activation is available, increasing its strategic value and removing the obligation to use the full allocation before the end of the race. This adjustment further enhances flexibility and competitive tension.

The introduction of PIT BOOST is supported by a strict regulatory framework designed to ensure safety and sporting fairness. Only three team members are permitted to work on the car during the PIT BOOST stop, with one managing the stop go procedure and two handling the charging equipment.

If a car requires repairs such as a front wing change or tyre replacement, the PIT BOOST process must be fully completed and the car unplugged before any additional work can take place. Any five or ten second time penalties must also be served before the PIT BOOST begins.

All pit stops are monitored by the FIA, with any deviations from the prescribed procedures reported to the stewards. In the event of technical issues, spare PIT BOOST rigs are available at the FIA garage and can be deployed with official authorisation.

Schedule

Saudi Arabia has been a constant presence on the Formula E calendar since Season 5, and the move to Jeddah has added a new visual and sporting dimension to the event. Racing under the lights across February 13 and 14, the double header weekend promises high intensity action from start to finish.

Free Practice 1 takes place on today (February 12) at 20:00 local time. Free Practice 2 follows on Friday February 13 at 13:30, ahead of qualifying at 15:40 and the Round 4 race at 20:05 local time.

Saturday February 14 features Free Practice 3 at 13:30, followed by qualifying at 15:40 and the Round 5 race at 20:05 local time, once again under the lights in Jeddah.

With the championship still searching for a dominant force, the return of PIT BOOST and the demands of a double header format, the Jeddah race week represents a critical point in Season 12. Over two nights in Saudi Arabia, Formula E is set to deliver not only speed and spectacle, but strategic depth capable of reshaping the title fight.
