Mercedes has finally released the long-awaited renders of their challenger for the 2026 Formula 1 season, the Mercedes-AMG F1 W17 E PERFORMANCE.
Mercedes’ 2026 challenger
The Mercedes-AMG F1 W17 E PERFORMANCE will be the team’s first car under the new technical regulations. The livery will run on advanced sustainable fuels developed by Mercedes’ Title and Technical Partner, PETRONAS.
While still maintaining the team’s classic black chassis, it is accompained by details coloured in the team’s iconic silver paint. The sidepods also feature a rhombas design which takes inspiration from the German Automotive brand’s AMG design.
Speaking on Mercedes’ 2026 challenger, CEO and Team Principal Toto Wolff shared how the new livery mirrors the team’s ambition as Formula 1 enters the next technical era.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal & CEO : “Formula One will undergo significant change in 2026, and we are prepared for that transition. The new regulations demand innovation and absolute focus across every area of performance. Our work on the new car, and the long-term development of the Power Unit and advanced sustainable fuels with PETRONAS, reflects that approach.”

A two-part spectale
The Brackley outlet decided to take a different approach to the usual Formula 1 car launch event, staggering the launch into two separate events. Following the digital launch of the 2026 Formula 1 livery, the team is set to hold an official launch event featuring key team members. Wolff will lead the event with drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli making an appearance. Senior team members will also be present to offer insights on the technical advancements of the W17 in response to the 2026 regulations.
Entering a new era with the goal of a title
Formula 1 will be entering a new era of regulations in 2026, and the competition will be tense as teams navigate the change. Mercedes had an impressive and decorated run in the initial turbo-hybrid era from 2014-2021, clinching every Constructors’ Championship title. Former Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton would dominate the era, winning every title with the exception of the 2016 Drivers’ Championship, which went to his teammate Nico Rosberg and in 2021, where he narrowly missed out on the title to Max Verstappen.
Mercedes failed to catch up with the next set of regulations from 2022-2025 and was unable to put themselves in a position for a title fight. The team will be looking to redeem themselves entering the 2026 Formula 1 season with new cars and new power units under the new regulations.
Mercedes’ 2026 driver lineup
Despite Mercedes’ struggles in recent years, the 2025 Formula 1 season saw decent and significant improvement in the team’s performance on track. Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton left Mercedes to join Ferrari prior to the start of the 2025 season. This created an opportunity for Mercedes F1 Junior Programme graduate Kimi Antonelli to make his series debut. Mercedes finished the season second in the Constructors’ Championship with 469 points scored by both drivers.
George Russell leads the team, taking on the role of the more senior and experienced driver of Mercedes’ 2026 driver lineup. The 27-year-old ended the 2025 season fourth in the standings with a total of 319 points to his name, earning the majority of the team’s points. The key highlight of Russell’s 2025 season was his pole-to-victory performance in both Montreal and Singapore. This kept the Britian in contention for the Drivers’ title until the final three rounds of the season. The 2026 season will mark Russell’s fifth campaign with Mercedes, and he is aiming to place himself in the title fight.

Racing alongside Russell is Kimi Antonelli, who made his debut the season prior. Following his rapid rise throughout the junior series, Antonelli graduated to Formula 1 in 2025. The Italian driver had an impressive career in the junior series, having claimed multiple series titles. Antonelli had skipped Formula 3 and made his Formula 2 debut in 2024, where he clinched two victories.
The Mercedes Junior Programme graduate had an impressive debut season, and he finished seventh in the standings with a total of 150 points. Early on in the 2025 season, Antonelli became the youngest driver to record a Formula 1 pole when he placed himself first on the grid for the Miami Grand Prix Sprint Race. He would later become the third youngest driver to record a podium-finish after he finished third in the Canadian Grand Prix and claimed two more podiums in Brazil and Las Vegas. Now entering his sophomore season in Formula 1, Antonelli will be looking to showcase more raw speed and potential on track.
