Ahead of the Qualifying session, drivers had to decide whether to use slick or wet tyres as the rain started to fall at Spa-Francorchamps. At the beginning, the majority of drivers chose to start the session on slick tyres to test and analyse the state of the track.

Early interruptions at Spa

Alexander Dunne prepared his first fast lap of the session; however, he was interrupted when Noel León spun out, bringing out a red flag. Fortunately, León was able to roll the Campos Racing car back and drive it back to the pitlane. León was able to still take part on the session.

Once the session got restarted, Nikola Tsolov, who was the fastest overall during the Practice session earlier, secured a provisional pole. However, Dunne was the one capable of beating the Bulgarian’s benchmark. Behind Dunne and Tsolov, Rafael Câmara set the third fastest lap with an almost five-tenths gap to pole.

As the Qualifying session reached its halfway point, several drivers opted to enter the pitlane to change their tyres. Meanwhile, both Invicta Racing drivers decided to set a last lap each, with Câmara moving up to second.

Rafael Câmara does it again

With less than ten minutes remaining on the clock, all drivers went out for the last stint of the Formula 2 Qualifying session. However, no major changes occurred in the first few minutes.

With 4 minutes remaining, a second red flag was deployed as Laurens Van Hoepen’s car was stopped at the starting line. That affected León’s lap and Dunne’s, and the session was stopped. With three and a half minutes remaining, Alex Dunne was on provisional pole, ahead of Câmara, and Tsolov in third. León’s time got deleted due to the double yellow flags.

The session restarted once again, and all drivers headed out for a final lap. After a lot of movement on the standings, Rafael Câmara put together an impressive lap and took the pole for Round 8 at Spa-Francorchamps.
