How Antonelli could clinch the 2026 F1 title in Austin

Kimi Antonelli heads into the United States Grand Prix with the chance to secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. With 340 points, the Mercedes driver holds a 102-point lead over George Russell and is 111 points clear of Lewis Hamilton, but a specific combination of results is required to settle the title in Austin.

Mercedes is also closing in on the Constructors’ Championship. The team leads with 578 points, 134 ahead of Ferrari, and could have its first mathematical opportunity to clinch the title in Mexico, depending on the results of the next two races.

With six rounds remaining, the championship enters a decisive phase. Antonelli has built a significant advantage and is in a position to control his own destiny, while Mercedes must turn its lead in the standings into a team championship.

What Antonelli needs in Austin

To clinch the championship in Austin, Antonelli must win the race. George Russell must also finish ninth or lower, while Lewis Hamilton needs to finish fifth or lower.

Victory would take Antonelli to 365 points. Russell, currently on 238, could score a maximum of two points with a ninth-place finish, taking him to 240. The gap between the Mercedes team-mates would therefore reach 125 points, exactly the maximum available across the five remaining rounds.

In this scenario, the countback on race wins would favour Antonelli. Having secured eight victories before Austin, the Italian would move to nine, while Russell has three and could not match that total over the remaining races. Even if both drivers finished the season level on points, Antonelli would win the championship on countback.

Hamilton must also finish outside the top four. A fifth-place finish would earn the Ferrari driver 10 points, taking him to 239 and leaving him 126 points behind Antonelli. With only 125 points remaining, Hamilton would no longer be able to catch the championship leader.

The margins are tight enough to make every position crucial. An eighth-place finish for Russell would earn him four points and keep the championship mathematically alive. Likewise, a fourth-place finish for Hamilton would add 12 points to his tally and prevent Antonelli from securing the title in Austin.

The other contenders also help put Antonelli’s opportunity into perspective. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris remain among the top six in the standings, but Antonelli’s victory would be enough to put the championship beyond their reach, based on the current points totals and the number of races remaining.

Austin therefore requires more than a victory from Antonelli. The Mercedes driver must combine his own result with specific finishing positions from his two closest title rivals. If all the conditions are met, the championship will be decided with five rounds still to go.

Why Mexico could become the next title opportunity

If any of the required conditions are not met in Texas, the championship fight will continue at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November. Antonelli’s advantage will remain a significant factor, but the results in Austin will determine the exact mathematical scenarios for the following round.

A victory without the necessary results from Russell and Hamilton would extend the Italian’s lead but would not guarantee the title. Conversely, a finish outside the top position could allow his rivals to reduce the gap and keep the fight alive for longer.

The calendar still includes races in Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. With five rounds remaining after Austin, a maximum of 125 points will be available to each driver, with no further Sprint events scheduled for the season.

The situation favours Antonelli because his rivals must do more than simply score points. They need to recover a substantial deficit in a relatively short period. For Russell, that means delivering strong results with little room for error. Hamilton, meanwhile, must keep his mathematical title hopes alive as Ferrari attempts to match Mercedes’ pace.

If Austin does not settle the championship, Mexico becomes the next major point of focus. The gap between the drivers after the United States Grand Prix will determine exactly what Antonelli needs to secure the title at the following round.

The advantage he has built puts the Italian in a strong position, but the mathematical confirmation remains decisive. Until no rival can catch him, each race represents another opportunity to move closer to the title, without officially bringing the championship fight to an end.

Mercedes face a different championship calculation

Mercedes is also in a strong position in the Constructors’ Championship. The team has 578 points, compared with Ferrari’s 444, giving it a 134-point advantage. McLaren and Red Bull Racing sit further back on 339 and 332 points respectively.

The lead is substantial, but not enough to secure the title in Austin. Even in the best possible scenario for Mercedes, with a one-two finish and Ferrari scoring no points, the gap would increase to 177 points. However, five rounds would still remain, with up to 215 points available to each team across those races.

Mexico emerges as the first mathematical opportunity to clinch the championship. After that round, four races would remain, allowing each team to score up to 172 points, with a maximum of 43 points available per Grand Prix for its two cars and no further Sprint events.

To guarantee the title, Mercedes would need to leave Mexico with a lead greater than the maximum number of points Ferrari could still score. That means building an advantage of at least 173 points after the race, without relying on a countback.

The Constructors’ Championship also depends on Russell’s performance. Unlike the Drivers’ Championship, in which Antonelli can settle the contest through his own results and those of his rivals, the team title is decided by the combined points scored by both cars.

Even if Antonelli becomes World Champion in Austin, Mercedes will need to keep scoring points. Consistent results, avoiding retirements and keeping both drivers near the front could prove decisive in securing the championship as early as possible.

If Ferrari manages to reduce the gap in Mexico, the decision could be postponed until the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos or one of the following rounds. In that scenario, Brazil becomes a potential venue for Mercedes’ celebrations, depending on what happens in the preceding races.

Mercedes heads into the final stretch with two separate objectives: securing Antonelli’s Drivers’ Championship and converting its advantage in the team standings into another Constructors’ title. Austin could mark the end of the individual title fight, while Mexico is the team’s next target. The outcome will depend on its ability to maintain its pace and turn its advantage into a decisive result.
